Sr. Maryposa Flutterby's Memorial Scholarship
Sister Maryposa Flutterby was a novice member of the Russian River Sisters. Born in the body of a man, Sr. Maryposa lived a life of enormous struggle, coming to grips with his gender incompatibility. As a man, he served his country in the Viet Nam conflicts, and later worked as a construction worker and carpenter. In the last three years of her life, Sr. Maryposa was living as a woman in preparation for sex reassignment surgery. She patiently guided us through understanding some of the enormous issues that so many others like her are struggling with. Her life was not an easy life, but she never gave up. She chose to live openly and courageously in a small community that often didn’t understand her struggle. She was active in the transgender community and also moderator of transgender online discussion boards.
Sr. Maryposa will forever live on in the hearts and minds of the worldwide sisterhood.
